それらの中で、私が強く違和感を感じる点を
述べたいと思います。
それは、この歌の冒頭部分、
Children behave
に対して、和訳の多くが、
「子供たち、行儀よくしなさい」
としている点です。
歌詞の本当の意味は、作者自身だけが知る
ものであり、何が正解か、私たちが安易に
述べるべきではありません。
しかし、この歌詞を何度も読み返してみると、
対象は「子供」に限定すべきではない、と私は考えます。
前回ご紹介した、Irene Cara の "Fame"
の冒頭部分、
Baby,look at me
を、「赤ちゃん、私を見て」と訳す人は
いないと思います。
相手に対して、上から目線で命令、主張
などをする場合にも、baby は使われます。
この曲の children も、baby と同じような
使われ方だと、私は考えます。
